iPhone Duo: Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Is Finally Here
Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with the iPhone Duo, a completely new type of iPhone that combines a compact smartphone with a much larger tablet-like display.
Instead of simply making another large-screen iPhone, Apple has built the iPhone Duo around two displays. When closed, users get a compact 5.4-inch outer display for everyday tasks. Open the phone and it transforms into a 7.6-inch folding display designed for multitasking, gaming, video, browsing and productivity.
With the new A20 Pro chip, a titanium foldable design, 48MP cameras, Apple Pencil support and a redesigned iOS experience, the iPhone Duo is easily one of Apple's biggest changes to the iPhone since the original model.

A 7.6-Inch Foldable Super Retina XDR Display
The main attraction is obviously the display. Open the iPhone Duo and you get a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR OLED folding display with a resolution of 1878 × 2670 pixels at 430 ppi.
The inner screen includes a nano-texture finish designed to reduce reflections and glare. It also supports Apple's ProMotion adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz, Always-On display, HDR, True Tone and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
Perhaps even more interesting is support for the Apple Pencil (USB-C). That makes the Duo more than simply a large iPhone and gives users another option for drawing, taking notes and working on the larger display.
5.4-Inch Outer Display for Everyday Use
You don't need to unfold the iPhone Duo every time you want to check a message or open an app.
The outside has its own 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a 1398 × 2034 resolution at 460 ppi. It also supports ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On display, HDR and Dynamic Island.
This creates two distinct ways to use the phone: keep it folded when you want something compact and open it when you need more screen space.
New Foldable Design and Titanium Construction
Apple has used Grade 5 titanium for the frame and hinge cover, while Ceramic Shield protects the exterior surfaces. The inner display also receives a scratch-resistant coating.
The phone measures just 5.2mm thick when open and 11.3mm when closed, with a total weight of 254 grams.
Apple has also managed to give the iPhone Duo an IP68 water and dust resistance rating, rated for a maximum depth of six metres for up to 30 minutes under laboratory conditions.
Multiple Ways to Use the iPhone Duo
The folding screen isn't just about making the display larger. Apple has adapted iOS to take advantage of different positions and orientations.
Users can open the Duo completely for a tablet-like experience, use it in landscape or portrait orientation, keep it closed for one-handed operation, or partially fold the device into seated and standing positions.
The larger screen also enables Split View multitasking, allowing two apps to run side by side. You could, for example, browse Safari while keeping Messages open, watch a video while working in another app, or reference information from one app while typing into another.
A20 Pro Performance
Powering the iPhone Duo is Apple's new A20 Pro, the same processor generation used in Apple's latest Pro iPhones.
The chip includes a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine and hardware-accelerated ray tracing.
Apple has also introduced a custom vapour chamber thermal system to help maintain performance during demanding workloads such as gaming, multitasking and on-device AI processing.
This is particularly important for a foldable phone because the larger display encourages users to run more demanding applications and multiple apps simultaneously.
48MP Dual Fusion Camera System
The iPhone Duo uses a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system rather than the triple-camera configuration found on some Pro iPhones.
The primary camera is a 48MP Fusion Main camera with an f/1.6 aperture and sensor-shift optical image stabilization. It can also provide a 12MP optical-quality 2x telephoto view.
Alongside it is a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera with a 120-degree field of view. The Ultra Wide camera also supports macro photography.
The foldable design introduces some interesting photography possibilities because the phone can effectively become its own stand. Apple has also developed camera features specifically around the Duo's two-screen design.
Two Different Front Camera Experiences
The outer display includes a 12MP Center Stage camera supporting features such as Center Stage for photos and video calls, ultra-stabilized video and Dual Capture.
When the iPhone Duo is open, Apple uses an under-display FaceTime camera on the inner screen. Hiding the camera underneath the display helps preserve the large uninterrupted viewing area.
Touch ID Returns on iPhone Duo
One of the most surprising iPhone Duo features is the return of Touch ID.
Instead of an in-display fingerprint scanner, Apple has integrated the Touch ID sensor directly into the side button. This allows users to authenticate purchases, unlock the phone and use Apple Pay with their fingerprint.
Battery Life and Fast Charging
The unusual folding design also means Apple has adopted a dual-battery architecture.
Apple rates the iPhone Duo for up to 44 hours of video playback using the outer display or up to 31 hours using the larger inner display. Typical use is rated at up to 24 hours.
With a compatible 60W or higher USB-C power adapter, Apple says the battery can reach approximately 50% charge in around 20 minutes.
MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging are supported at up to 25W.
Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread
The iPhone Duo also receives Apple's latest connectivity hardware. It supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, 5G, NFC, second-generation Ultra Wideband and Thread networking.
Thread support is particularly useful as Matter-based smart home products continue to expand, allowing compatible Apple devices to participate more deeply in modern smart home ecosystems.
The USB-C port supports charging, DisplayPort video output and USB 3 data transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps.
iOS 27.1 Designed for a Foldable iPhone
Hardware is only half of the foldable equation. Apple has redesigned parts of iOS 27 specifically for the iPhone Duo and its larger display.
Apps can adapt as users move between the outer and inner screens, while the larger display supports side-by-side multitasking and new layouts.
The Duo will ship with iOS 27.1 and includes Apple Intelligence along with Apple's new Siri AI features, although the availability of individual AI features can depend on language and region.

Apple is offering the iPhone Duo in four storage capacities:

As expected for Apple's first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo sits at the very top of the iPhone price range.
In the United States, the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB. In Canada, pricing starts at $2,999 CAD.

iPhone Duo Release Date
Apple says iPhone Duo pre-orders begin October 16, 2026, with general availability beginning October 23, 2026 in the United States, Canada and dozens of other markets.
That means Apple's first foldable will soon compete directly with established foldable devices from Samsung, Google and other Android manufacturers.
Is the iPhone Duo Worth the Excitement?
The iPhone Duo isn't simply another annual iPhone upgrade. It introduces an entirely different form factor to Apple's smartphone lineup.
The combination of a pocket-friendly 5.4-inch outer display and expansive 7.6-inch inner display could be particularly attractive to people who use their phones for productivity, gaming, reading, video and multitasking.
There are compromises. At 254 grams, the Duo is considerably heavier than a conventional smartphone, and its premium starting price puts it well beyond the cost of most flagship phones. The dual-camera system also lacks the dedicated telephoto hardware available on Apple's Pro models.
But for users who have been waiting for Apple to enter the foldable market, the iPhone Duo represents the biggest change to the iPhone form factor in years.
With a 7.6-inch foldable display, A20 Pro performance, Apple Pencil support, 48MP cameras, redesigned multitasking and Apple's tightly integrated hardware and software ecosystem, the iPhone Duo could make foldable phones significantly more visible to mainstream smartphone buyers.
